ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has finally started releasing the new gTLDs (Generic Top Level Domains) which have been highly anticipated by the internet community for years.
The first set of gTLDs that are now being released are geared towards international communities not well served by the current system. The introduction of non-Latin characters into the TLD community opens the availability of domains for those who use Cyrillic, Arabic and Chinese alphabets with others such as Hindi becoming available later. This expands the global scope of the internet exponentially as more gTLDs with non-Latin extensions are added.
Currently, four new gTLDs have been released:
- شبكة. (xn--ngbc5azd) – This is Arabic for “web/network” and is controlled by International Domain Registry Pty. Ltd.
- .онлайн (xn--80asehdb) – This is Cyrillic for “online” and is controlled by CORE Association
- .сайт (xn--80aswg) – This is Cyrillic for “site” and is controlled by CORE Association
- .游戏 (xn--unup4y) – This is Chinese for “game(s)” and is controlled by Spring Fields, LLC
Making these gTLDs available now enables tens of thousands of sites to take better advantage of their native populations ability to connect and utilize native resources without having to cope with Latin characters in web addresses. This expands the ability of the internet to serve more users in their native language, making further adoption easier and faster. Releasing roadblocks like these is one of the major reasons the new gTLD’s.
A new era of the internet is now beginning. This is just the start of a new wave of gTLDs that will expand the existing capabilities of the internet as well as adding new abilities with the inclusion of non-Latin extensions. While the internet has always been global in scope, the addition of gTLDs specifically for the international communities not served by Latin alphabets makes the internet a more global community than ever. The release of these four New gTLDs is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the possibilities and exploring those possibilities begins now.
These new domains, while initially protected by what is knows as a “sunrise period” for companies and others who own copyrights, trademarks, etc. will evolve into what is knows as “generally available” after thirty days. After that, everyone will have the opportunity to own a great domain name without struggling for a name due to the lack of availability.
