New gTLD Pre-Registration Reality Check
Services are popping up online that propose to ‘pre-register’ domain names under new top level domains. In light of this development we think it is important for all prospective new domain registrants to understand a critical point:
It is NOT POSSIBLE to register, block, guarantee, reserve, or in ANY way secure a domain name under a New gTLD at this time. That notion is premature.
If you want to register New gTLD domain names, your best option is to create a watchlist
Each TLD must go through a typical Launch Sequence. New gTLDs will become available to different groups, at different times, at different prices under different exchange conditions. Before domain names under new gTLDs truly become available to everday citizens on a first come-first served basis they will be made available first to Brand owners during Sunrise, then to highest bidders in Landrush and Premium auctions.
ICANN has just begun the process of evaluation and review of proposed new domain extensions. The TLD registries that would provision the new gTLD’s don’t exist yet. There are no prices or policies for the registration of these gTLDs established yet.
No organization exists today with authority to grant you any rights to a domain name under any New gTLD.
If you are interested in registering a domain name under one of the proposed new gTLDs, your best approach is to keep informed.
